WSI's Activities and Outreach

· Earth Week and the WSI Annual Meeting & Party:
WSI participated in the Earth Week Celebrations at both Sonoma State University and San Francisco's Presidio on April 22 and 24, respectively, and ended an eventful week by welcoming members of World Stewardship Institute and invited guests to the home of Gail and Ed Castellini near Occidental, CA. Members heard a summary of our Institute's programs and future plans from individual Board and staff members.

One feature of the day was a brief presentation on the meaning of stewardship by the Executive Director, Ed Castellini. He reminded members present that the word stewardship has been debased already by the press and in common usage - that it signifies only a sort of "care" or "attention." But in reality, this word should signify a whole "way" or ethic of life in accordance with nature and in peaceful human rhythms. WSI stands for the full development and unfolding of the meaning inherent in this word-for the working out of stewardship in our area, in our country, our world.

WSI thanks Chiaki Yamamoto for her careful sheparding of the party, from idea to reality. We also thank our members and friends, who make our work possible by their interest and their donations.

· Health and Harmony Fair, Santa Rosa, CA: June 14-15
World Stewardship Institute, together with the committee for the Celebration of the Russian River (see story page 5), had a table for the public at the acclaimed Health and Harmony Fair at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, CA. WSI encountered many members of the public and signed up dozens of citizens with the Action Alert Service, which alert our representatives about important political decisions taken regarding our environment.

· The Lorax at Sonoma State University: May 27th
World Stewardship Institute understands that stewardship education begins with the youngest members of our society. Sarah Nossaman and Ed Castellini took three classes of 3rd and 4th graders from local schools on an exercise in the important words and ideas of stewardship. Before and after Sarah and Ed read Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" to these classes, they explained to the children something of the notion of world environmental stewardship as part of SSU's "Environmental Day". Then the children went outside into the campus quad and touched, felt, smelled, and even tasted trees to intuit something of their spirit, as the Lorax clearly did in the book. Did children get some idea that there are eyes and intelligence active in nature around us? We hope so.
